Atomic Habits for Finance

The rescue plan gets you out of the hole. This section is what keeps you out of it: a fixed monthly review, with immediate pivots the moment a number is off target — not deferred to next quarter.

Protect Your Thinking Time

The default reflex when a number is off is to work harder and hustle faster. But hustle is a tactic, not a strategy — you can't outwork a Profit and Loss statement that was never engineered correctly. Your monthly review is protected thinking time: uninterrupted, away from the daily grind, spent asking the right questions instead of reacting to the nearest fire.

Build the Habit Loop

  • Cue: Pick a fixed day and time for your financial review — anchor it to something already on your calendar, monthly at minimum.
  • Routine: The review itself — update your scorecard, check rescue plan progress, tally points.
  • Reward: Something you only do after the review is complete, so completing it becomes reinforcing.

Steps

  1. Set a recurring calendar block for your financial review — same day, same time, every month. Protect it the way you'd protect a client meeting.
  2. Keep the routine short and identical every time: scorecard, rescue plan, points.
  3. Track it: mark the review complete the same way you track rescue plan streaks.
  4. If a target is missed, the action is an immediate pivot that month — don't wait for the next review to decide what to do.
  5. Revisit your Target Profit and Loss statement itself every quarter — targets should evolve as your business does, but stay non-negotiable once set.

You'll walk away with:

A recurring monthly routine for reviewing your numbers and pivoting immediately when they're off — so financial discipline outlasts this course.
